Alex Bregman Volunteers at the Society of St. Vincent de Paul's Food Fair

Hi friends:

I'm sure by now you've heard about Alex Bregman joining us at our Vincentian Service Center to distribute food. It was a great event, and together we were able to help over 700 families with food, including the distribution of Child Nutrition Boxes as part of Bregman's #FEEDHOU Campaign. Check out the full interview here.

Like all staff and key volunteers, Alex and Reagan had to get their temperature taken and complete a COVID-19 questionnaire before the event started. This safety precaution is our way of being responsible to avoid potentially exposing the community and each other.

Alex and Reagan were taken to their designated volunteer station. The couple distributed the same Child Nutrition Boxes they packaged a week ago while volunteering at the Houston Food Bank. Before COVID-19, the Society held three regularly scheduled food fairs per month, averaging about 350 families at each event.

On April 4, our first food fair after COVID-19, we served over 400 families. Some, we had to turn away. This past Saturday, we thought we were ready. Alex and Heather saw first-hand the intense need in the community. As the Child Nutrition Boxes decreased, Alex began to feel concerned and decided to take action. He got inside of his car and drove to the nearest chain restaurant and purchased, out of his own pocket, numerous meals to give to kids who would be left without a nutrition box.

At the same time, I made my way around the block to try to get a headcount and see just how many people were waiting. I had seen long lines, but never this long. I, too, jumped in my car and drove to our Central office to pick up an envelope with gift cards.

Together, as ONE SOCIETY, we served over 700 families and handed out 917 Child Nutrition Boxes. While we could not help everyone, YOU can help us try our best to serve by supporting our Emergency Fund.

Warm Blessings,

Ann Schorno, Executive Director
