Frequently Asked Questions-Volunteering
The Society of St. Vincent de Paul relies on volunteers every day. Our various projects offer fun and unique ways for individuals and groups of all kinds to contribute their time, talents and resources. Thank you for your desire to aid us in our mission to Change Lives and Serve Communities by providing financial, material, educational and spiritual support to people in need; regardless of background or faith and collaborating with other organizations to empower people to achieve self-sufficiency.
Q: What hours are you open and able to accept volunteers?
A: Our administrative offices are open M-F from 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM.
The Vincentian Service Center and Bellaire Resale Shop is open to receive volunteers Tues- Friday from 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM and Saturday 8 AM – 4:00 PM opportunities include Donation Warehouse, Resale Shop, and SVDP Food Depot
Q: Can I bring a group?
A: Our volunteer projects can accommodate groups of various sizes and can provide team-building opportunities. We recommend you schedule at least three weeks in advance, but no less than 1 week.
Q: Can children participate?
A: We would love for your family, school or youth group to join us. Volunteering is a great way to teach children about service and spend some quality time with them. All children and youth between the ages of 8-14 must be accompanied by an adult.
Q: How many adults are needed for children/youth?
A: One adult chaperone is needed for every five children ages 12-16
Q: What if I need to cancel?
A: Please contact our Volunteer Coordinator as soon as possible (preferably at least a week in advance), so we can be sure to invite other volunteers to take your place.
Q: What if more people want to come with my group than signed up?
A: Please contact our volunteer coordinator as soon as possible to see if there is room available.
Q: Can I come for just an hour or two?
A: Our projects are designed for specific times, so we ask that volunteers commit to the entire shift. For that reason, it is also very important that you arrive on time.
Q: Is St. Vincent de Paul able to accommodate the special needs of a handicapped or disabled person as a volunteer?
A: We work on a situation by situation basis. Please call our Volunteer Coordinator to inquire about your needs.
Q: How can I complete court-related community service hours?
A: Mandatory service hours are tracked differently than our regular projects. Visit mandatory community service program for information.
